Parallax Essay
René Girard, Tantra, and The Scapegoat Mechanism
Some would say that René Girard has created the last grand theory of religion and the origins of civilization—a truly grand narrative. Arguably, he has shown that grand narratives are still possible, contrary to the usual postmodern claim that 'grand narratives are dead.' While his critics claim he has a 'mono-theory,' focusing only on the west and Christianity, it's hard to argue with 'mimetic desire' and the 'scapegoat mechanism' as comprehensive ideas. They are pretty unshakable. And even though Girard articulated the scapegoat mechanism through Christianity, he believed his anthropology could be applied to all religious traditions.
About Parallax
Parallax is a European online media platform offering constructive and fresh perspectives for the post-post modern age. We publish essays and podcasts, webinars and lectures, and are a hub for original and heterodox thinking.
The word ‘parallax’ stems from the old greek παράλλαξις parállaxis, which means to shift the viewpoint of the observer. The name suggests psychoactive and alternative sense-making, as opposed to mainstream narratives and ideologies.
Through our work with various European ‘digital tribes’, we create media and Bildung (education), and promote social, cognitive and spiritual development. Moreover, we aim to provide a European counterpoint to the dominant anglo-saxon narratives.
